BASIC KEELBOAT
INSTRUCTION
Long
Beach
Sailing is the premier
sailing club on
Alamitos
Bay
to offer Keelboat Instruction for beginners. Our course encourages an
individualized pace with one on one training rather than constraining you to weekly course
schedules. Training includes: boat
preparation, engine review, docking, raising and trimming sails
(including reefing techniques), anchoring, man-overboard and emergency
procedures, as well as boating etiquette and rules.
The course is 5 sessions on 5 different boats totaling 20
hours on the water. The price of $525 is less than the cost of
chartering the same vessels for the same time periods! We use the same text as the ASA certified
(There is no such thing as a government recognized sailing or boating
license in the USA) schools, and our training
group includes a 50 ton Merchant Marine Captain with open ocean
delivery experience.
Our students have
gone directly from our course to Caribbean bareboat chartering, with
only the comment made upon return being that they were "surprised" at
how easy it was to sail a 50 footer.
THE CRUISING SAILBOAT
With the addition of the CT-47 our club has been able to add a unique
course designed to help prepare people for cruising as well as bareboat
charters in distant locations. With this $595 advanced course, we add on to the basic course with
training on a multi-masted vessel, with exceptional modern electronic
equipment, a session at night, and finally an open water trip to
Catalina and back is part of the course.
This $595 course has 5 sessions on the water and includes:
primary systems review and preparation,
multiple masted sail trimming, windlass operation, autopilot operation,
radar and GPS operation, chart plotting, logging, and night sailing.
BIG BOAT SAILING
The MacGregor 65 offers our customers the ability to sail on a open
ocean racing vessel and experience the thrills of sailing across the top
of the water rather than through it. Our training removes the risk
from the thrills by spending the time to set up and explain the speed
runs in advance of hauling the sails. The students will haul the
sails and steer the vessel. The instructor will provide timely
assistance to insure safety. This course is taught without
spinnaker for $400 per day. Adding spinnaker training requires a
second instructor and this cost per day is $550. Students are
allowed to train a day on the way to Catalina, and then to just relax on
the way back at the lesser bareboat fee. This course does not
include instrumentation or navigation, it is all about getting and
maintaining big boat speed.
This course is given during the day, one day at a time per the above
description and includes:
leg planning, sail prep, sail hauling, sail
trim and top water steering..
